So, as many of you know, I teach at a high school :) A friend of mine from Alpha Phi Omega, Mike Yanchak, is a member/manager of DoubleShot!. For those that have never heard of them, they are an all male, all vocal band.

Now, I've seen Mike sing before. Granted it's been several years, but I've seen him sing (heck, I've seen him sing more recently, but that was an impromptu concert after the power went out at Dinner Dance in 2004). So, I had pretty high expectations. That being said, I wasn't actually expecting to hear Mike sing because he's the voice percussionist for the group.

So, I skipped my planning period and part of my lunch to go and hear the group. The principal did his thing and then the guys start to filter onto the stage from behind the curtain. Everyone is there except for Mike. Now I had seen him that morning, so I knew that he was there *grins* He comes out from behind the curtain and I'm expecting to hear him saying something or start some percussion stuff, but instead he starts to sing. OMG. So flipping amazing. I was glad that I was sitting down, because if I hadn't been I'm not sure if I would have been able to continue to hold myself up. It literally brought tears to my eyes. I don't remember what song it was, but damn was it good.

The group as a whole is amazing. I can't even begin to describe how totally awesome they are. When you watch the video (if you follow the link) understand that you are missing several layers of nuances. It doesn't even begin to do the guys justice. They are recording their first CD (and 2nd since one is going to be Live and the other memorex *grins*) and I hope that things translate a little better. I suspect multiple tracks on the sound recording device will help (say it all together now: geek)

Mike ability to work a crowd has not diminished. There's a segment where it's just him on stage doing some mouth percussion stuff and he's fiddling with a "radio" changing channels. Wow. Just wow. At one point the kids were like "keep that station on" I don't know what the song was (I'm not that up on the names of the songs that the kids really like even though I might catch them on 96.1) but they LOVED it. And there was a part where the beat an melody interlace. I have no bloody clue how he did it, but he did.

The teachers were talking about it later. They were all very impressed and thought that the assembly was great. Some of them have been to the website and might even go to the next show. They often perform at Atria's at PNC. I think I'm really going to try to go to one of those.
